The books I usually write about on this blog fictional. :) But I couldn't help but share what I've learned.
I have always... always... for the last (approximately) twenty-two years I have read my scriptures everyday front to back, cover to cover, start to finish. I had heard others say they read by topic, but I'd never even wanted to try. I liked the way I read. I always felt accomplished starting the book and then finishing it.
But I got a whim... and I decided I wanted to try for a month or two reading by topic. I wasn't sure what to pick for my first topic or how to go about it. I remember really liking a particular scripture about the Savior in John. So, I decided "John" would be my first topic. I'd read all of John.
Oh. My. Goodness. I have never loved John so much in my life.
I love the scriptures, I love Jesus Christ. And reading the story of His life and crucifixion is always tender and touching and sweet to me. But skipping right to John made the retelling so much more powerful. Every detail stood out and I practically wept through the whole thing. I felt a renewed gratitude and love for Him whom I already love. I felt a new love and not just a learning of for people like Mary Magdalene.
It was exhilarating and happy--just so so happy.
I could hardly wait to pick my next topic! Which btw is Mary Magdalene. If you've never tried it, you really should. I'm a fan. :)
